Just a piece of advice – if you’re on a business trip to Lisbon, remember to schedule a few hours of relaxation. It would be a shame to miss the treasures around Portugal’s capital and the opportunity to impress your colleagues.

Impress your colleagues with your historical knowledge

Drive 29 km northwest from Lisbon to reach Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The romantic village is full of gardens, tiled villas, fortresses, and extravagant, colorful palaces surrounded by beautiful green hills overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. You’ll gaze in awe at the two conical chimneys from the 14th century of the Palácio Nacional, the striking yellow Palácio da Pena, or the Moorish fortress Castelo dos Mouros from the 8th century, perched on the mountains of the Serra de Sintra.

Palácio da Pena, Estrada da Pena, 2710-609 Sintra

Castelo dos Mouros, 2710-405 Sintra

Prove you have impeccable taste

You don’t have to be an architecture fan to admire the National Palace of Queluz. This former summer palace of the royal family is located about 13 km northwest of Lisbon and is one of the most opulent palaces in Portugal. We particularly recommend the Throne Room with its gilded carvings, mirrors, and paintings. The overwhelming artworks on the ceiling of the Ambassador’s Hall are also stunning.

Show everyone that you work hard and can relax just as intensely

Cascais is located 31 km west of the capital on the Atlantic coast and is a peaceful, cosmopolitan holiday area with a charming coastline of diverse beaches, from wild surf beaches to calm beaches for relaxation. Along the 30 km of coastline, you can relax on the wonderful beaches of Tamariz, Conceição, Rainha, or Duquesa and then end the day with heavenly seafood specialties in the streets of the historic city center.

Relax like the Portuguese

If you want to know where the locals relax, hop in your rental car and drive 13 km south over the Ponte 25 de Abril, which closely resembles the Golden Gate Bridge. Costa da Caparica offers a laid-back atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and great surf spots. By day, the sandy shore welcomes colorful boats selling freshly caught fish. By night, really cool beach parties take place there.
