The Müller family lives in Hamburg and is planning a Roadtrip to Munich… with a rented electric car. From the north all the way to the south — rented and fully electric — is that possible? Absolutely!

About 800 kilometers across Germany with a rented electric car: For the Müller family, this is an absolute first. The reactions of their friends and relatives to their travel plans are mixed. “Great,” some say approvingly. Others are more skeptical: “Traveling hundreds of kilometers with an electric car… isn’t that difficult with the limited range and charging, right?” (Spoiler alert: It’s not difficult at all, it’s actually quite easy!)

The four Hamburgers plan their Roadtrip together. In Munich, they want to visit relatives they haven’t seen in a long time. Before enjoying themselves in the Bavarian capital, there are two stops: one in Hanover, where family friends live whom they also want to meet — and another stop in Bayreuth, the city of the legendary Bayreuth Festival, which Mrs. Müller has always wanted to see.

Roadtrip through Germany with an electric car: here’s how it works

First, the Müller family visits the Europcar website to check if electric cars are available in Hamburg. Of course, they are — in their case, in Hamburg Wandsbek, not far from the family’s home. The trip is supposed to last a week and a half, so Mr. Müller enters the exact dates into the website’s search function. Then comes the moment of the important decision: What type of electric car should it be? The family decides on a fully electric model, the Audi E-Tron. It’s spacious, has five seats — and an automatic transmission. “How long can we drive on one charge?” daughter Marie rightly asks. A quick Google search later, it’s clear: The car has a range of about 440 kilometers. Sure, one charge isn’t enough for the entire trip — but neither is a regular tank.

Charging on the go — how does it work?

At Europcar, not only is renting the car easy — everything else is taken care of too. This naturally includes charging electric cars. With the Shell Recharge card, customers have access to over 270,000 charging points in more than 35 countries, including many fast-charging networks. That sounds great, the Müller family thinks — and they get a Shell Recharge card to make charging even easier.

It’s quickly clear: The range works wonderfully. The Müller family rents the car from Europcar — and picks it up on the day of the Roadtrip. Everything goes smoothly. The journey starts at 11 a.m., and it’s about 160 kilometers to Hanover. The first drive takes just under two hours. With the Shell Recharge app, a charging station is quickly found — and the car has enough power for the journey to continue the next day without any worries.

Fast charging on the road — it’s easy

The next day, a significantly longer distance follows — from Hanover to Bayreuth, it’s about 430 to 470 kilometers, depending on the route, so roughly a full charge or more. But that’s no problem, because the Müller family easily finds a fast-charging station on the way, where their electric car can be fully charged in about 30 minutes. In the meantime, the four of them take a coffee break — and soon after, they continue with full power!

After a night in a hotel, the next day they head to the trip’s destination: about 240 kilometers on the A9 to Munich. No problem, as the range is enough for double that. After a few relaxing days in Munich, the journey heads back north — but with a stop in Bamberg.

Long distance with an electric car? No problem

As you can see from the Müller family’s trip: Even a longer distance is no problem with an electric car nowadays! After all, the charging station network for electric cars is now well developed — and with Europcar, you can drive electrically without any worries! The Shell Recharge card is particularly useful, offering 24/7 support. So if you’ve always dreamed of an electric Roadtrip — whether through Germany or abroad — the motto is: go for it!
