What documents do you need to drive in Europe?

If you are an EU citizen, you only need a valid driving license. If you have a visa in an EU country or are a permanent resident of an EU country, you need a valid driving license from the country where you reside.
For non-EU citizens, the rules are a bit more complex. Some countries in the European Union accept a driving license from your home country, while others require a document known as the International Driving Permit (IDP). If you are not from an EU country and plan to drive across Europe, it is a good idea to get an IDP just to be safe. Technically, UK citizens do not need an IDP, but it may be required if you have a paper driving license or a license issued in Guernsey, Gibraltar, Jersey, or the Isle of Man. Obtaining an IDP is very simple and inexpensive, so it’s better to have one to avoid any worries.
To get an IDP, you must be 18 years or older and have a valid driving license. You need to pay a small fee, fill out a form, and submit your application along with two passport-sized photos. You can apply for an IDP at the town hall of the municipality where you are registered. Usually, you can get your IDP immediately at the counter and take it with you.
Keep in mind that an IDP is not a replacement for your driving license, although it is a valid form of identification. Always carry your driving license and your IDP when driving abroad.
Additionally, if you are an EU citizen driving in Europe, you need your passport or national identity card. Permanent residents and visa holders from the EU must carry their residence permit and visa. Non-EU citizens need a passport that is valid for at least three months after the date you leave the EU and that was issued in the last ten years. Depending on your country of origin, you may need a visa to enter the EU.
What are the requirements to rent a car in Europe?

To legally rent and drive a car in the EU, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driving license from the country where you reside. Your driving license must be valid for at least the duration of your stay.
All rental cars in the EU must be covered by liability insurance. Make sure you always have your car rental documents on hand, as they contain all the insurance details should the authorities wish to see them. If you are driving your rental car from the EU to a non-EU country, such as Switzerland, you must inform your car rental company so they can provide the correct license plates.
