On the Mediterranean coast lies one of Spain’s biggest tourist attractions. There is plenty to see and do in Barcelona, a city that offers numerous leisure opportunities.

If you want to know more about the sights of Barcelona, here are the places that are definitely worth a visit in the capital of Catalonia.

The Sagrada Familia, the symbol of the city

This cathedral is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was designed by Antonio Gaudí, who began construction in 1882 thanks to donations from the citizens of Barcelona. Gaudí led the construction project until his death in 1926, but the work continues today based on his plans.

The Nativity facade and the Passion facade are particularly impressive. Visitors entering the cathedral are overwhelmed by the visual effect of the colorful stained glass windows.

We recommend climbing one of the towers to enjoy an unforgettable view of the city. You don’t have to wait in line for hours if you buy the tickets online.

Park Güell

Eusebi Güell, a prominent entrepreneur from Barcelona, asked Gaudí to create an exclusive residential area for the wealthiest families in the city. However, the concept was so elitist that construction was halted in 1914. It then became a private garden that Güell occasionally made available to the city for public exhibitions. After the entrepreneur’s death in 1926, the city purchased the estate to turn it into a park.

Even now, a hundred years after its opening, the park still amazes visitors with its remarkable structure. Those who walk around are constantly surprised by the mix of styles, the rounded shapes, and the colorful environment. Color is an essential element of this garden: with colorful flowers, trees, and unusual materials like ceramic objects, Gaudí created a wondrous garden that is unique in the city.

Parc de la Ciutadella

This park, inspired by the major European parks (including the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris), was the only public park in Barcelona until the mid-19th century.

It not only features large groves and small gardens but also the Barcelona Zoo, which for years was home to the famous albino gorilla, Copito de Nieve (Snowflake). Another attraction is the lake, where you can rent rowboats for a boat ride, the ideal activity with children.

Passeig de Gràcia

The Passeig de Gràcia, considered the ‘Golden Mile’ of Barcelona, is one of the city’s main shopping streets.

But this street also houses the two main modern symbols designed by Gaudí: la Pedrera (the real name is actually Casa Milà, and the house was built for a wealthy family at the beginning of the 20th century) and Casa Batlló (constructed between 1904 and 1906).

Las Ramblas and Boquería

This street is also a symbolic place in Barcelona, running from Plaça de Catalunya to the oldest part of the port. This avenue is lined with restaurants and shops and was famous for its many flower and bird stalls. Today, you must not miss the Boquería, a traditional market with local and exotic products.

View over the city from Montjuïc

The best viewpoint over the city is located in the former fort on the Montjuïc hill. The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya is also located here, and you can enjoy an amazing light show at the Magic Fountain.
