Here are the things to know when going on vacation in Aquitaine, from places to visit to culinary discoveries.

Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage site

Bordeaux is one of the most beautiful cities in France and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Also known as the Port of the Moon, it hosts festivals every year such as the Wine Festival and the River Festival. Located on the banks of the Garonne, it boasts some jewels of French architecture like the Grand Théâtre and the buildings surrounding the Place de la Bourse.

Charming small villages

Some villages in Aquitaine are picturesque. Saint-Emilion, for example, surrounded by vineyards and known for its wines, is a magnificent small village whose cobbled streets and cloisters amaze more and more visitors each year. There is also the smallest village in France, Castelmoron d’Albret, whose four hectares are truly worth a visit. By renting a car, you can comfortably discover all these villages in Aquitaine from behind the wheel.

The Atlantic Ocean and the Landes forest

During a vacation in Aquitaine, it is imperative to discover the Dune of Pyla, near Arcachon. The highest dune in Europe, it faces the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Landes forest on the other. During the high season, you can climb to the top via a staircase, but in other months, you follow the paths left by visitors. The view is breathtaking.

The Garonne and the Canal du Midi

The Garonne is the river that flows through Aquitaine. Sports enthusiasts will be pleased to know that a canal was created in the 17th century. A small path allows hikers and cyclists to explore the region while enjoying a beautiful view of nature and the Garonne. This canal, also known as the Canal des Deux Mers, connects the Garonne to the Mediterranean Sea. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it crosses the Midi-Pyrénées and Languedoc-Roussillon regions.

Gastronomy

The Southwest is primarily known for its gastronomy and fine wines. During a stay in Aquitaine, you won’t be able to resist a good foie gras accompanied by a glass of Monbazillac, Tariquet, or Loupiac. With oysters as a starter and some cannelés for dessert, you’re sure to enjoy yourself. And if you prefer a light lunch, think of the Landes salad, a little pleasure to be enjoyed without moderation.
