The surf in Portugal is often synonymous with excellence. It is here that many WCT pros come to train, and every year, one of the world’s most colossal waves is surfed off the small port of Nazaré. The vast Portuguese Atlantic coast offers surfers of varying levels incredible sensations and breathtaking landscapes, provided you can explore it a bit. Summer (which can run from May to September) is often windy, which can make surfing conditions more challenging. Some precautions should be taken (it’s not uncommon to wear a wetsuit in summer, for example). Here’s a detailed review of our favorite spots in Portugal.

Supertubos, Peniche: it’s all in the name

When it works, this spot offers waves of rare perfection. This sandy beach is located very close to the small town of Peniche, which also offers significant tourist charms. Easily accessible by car, it is pleasant and very wide. Expect to see perfect left barrels (and a few short rights) that can reach up to 4 meters on good days! This demanding spot is more suited to experienced surfers.

Surfing and tourism at Coxos, Ericeira

Ericeira is a typical small town on the Portuguese coast located 40 minutes from Lisbon. While the town itself is worth a visit, it is also a world-renowned surfing destination. Again, be careful if you are a beginner: strong currents can take you offshore if you are not vigilant enough. The presence of rocks and the power of the waves, which break right and hold perfectly at 5 meters (in winter), can create challenging conditions. Its proximity to Lisbon means you might encounter a lot of people… It’s better to visit outside of holiday periods.

Surfing in the city at Carcavelos near Lisbon

Carcavelos is undoubtedly the best compromise between the city’s appeal (for those also interested in visiting the Portuguese capital) and the advantages of a high-quality surf spot. You can even get there by train in less than an hour! The sandy beach, very popular with Lisbon locals, is easily accessible on foot. Carcavelos offers a regular and consistent left and guarantees a great session just minutes from Lisbon.

Arrifana, Algarve: a beach among a plethora of choices

In the south of the country, in the Algarve, the spots offer surfers-explorers a wealth of choices. The beach of Arrifana, for example, strongly resembles a little lost paradise. Relatively inaccessible from the road (you’ll need to walk a bit), it is quite wild with rocks that can catch you off guard when paddling back to the break. The lefts and rights attract many locals and visiting surfers, both amateurs and experienced. If you find the beach too crowded, take your car and explore the surrounding coast: there are many spots in the region.

North Canyon, Nazaré: the myth

Beware: huge waves! This is where the world’s biggest waves are talked about; no wonder, as it is the deepest underwater canyon in Europe. Needless to say, the currents are lively. The wave is well-deserved: the beach is only accessible with a bit of walking. But the result is worth it: powerful left and right waves reserved only for experienced surfers (most of the time, surrounded by jet skis for safety and assisted take-offs).
