Situated right on the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is the capital of Finland’s most northern province, Lapland. It is of course famous for being the home of Santa Claus, and many activities centre around the Christmas experience, such as reindeer sled rides, the Santa Claus Express, and Santa Claus Village, but there is much more on offer as well. When driving in Rovaniemi, use the right hand side of the road and overtake to the left. Speed limits are 50km/h in built-up areas, 100-120km/h on motorways, and a variable limit of between 80 and 100km/h on other roads. Speed limits are displayed on a round sign with a red circle outline.

In the city centre most on-street parking is chargeable – pay at a ticket machine and then display the ticket inside your car. The rate is 1.40 euro / hour. You can move to a different parking space using the same ticket as long as it has time remaining on it. Separate parking arrangements and charges are in place at the train station and airport.

Credit cards are accepted at most petrol stations.

Winter sports enthusiasts will love the opportunities available in the Rovaniemi area, including cross country skiing and snow shoe trekking. But for downhill skiing and snowboarding, head 170km north to Levi, the largest ski resort in Finland.

On many people’s bucket list, seeing the Northern Lights is a breathtaking experience.
