Driving in Bari
In order to rent a car in Italy, you need to be over the age of 18 and hold a valid EU licence. International driver’s licences are accepted but not mandatory.
On motorways the maximum speed limit is 130 km/h, whereas on main roads and secondary roads it is 100 km/h and 90 km/h respectively. In urban areas, the speed limit is set between 50-70 km/h and lowered around populated areas like schools.
Paid car parking is enforced Monday to Saturday, from 8.30am to 8.30pm. There are several underground car parks in the centre. Blue road signs and markings indicate paid parking zones. White road markings means parking time is limited but free. Yellow parking bays are reserved for special vehicles, the Police, handicapped etc. On Sundays and public holidays it is often free to park.
In the historic centre of Bologna, there is a ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) enforced on Monday to Saturday from 12pm to 12am. Only residents or permit holders can enter this zone. Be aware that this area is monitored by cameras and you will be fined if you enter without a permit.
In Italy, most of the motorways are toll roads. These can be paid with cash or credit/debit cards.
Plan your journeys carefully, taking into account that very few petrol stations in Italy are open on Sundays. Those that are, are often closed on Mondays.
