Driving around Espoo is generally simple and roads are not too busy. Drive on the right side and overtake to the left.

Speed limits are 50km/h in built-up areas, 100-120km/h on motorways, and a variable limit of between 80 and 100km/h on other roads.

When parking in the city, always park in the direction of traffic and at least five metres from any pedestrian crossings and junctions. Most city centre parking spaces need to be paid for at a street vending machine with the ticket displayed in your car. In some areas, parking is free but requires a parking disc to be placed on your dashboard displaying your arrival time.

An hour and a half from Espoo is Hanko, a lovely town with a mix of architectural styles reflecting its history of disputed ownership by the Russians and Swedes in the 17 and 18 centuries. Full of excellent cafes and restaurants, it’s a perfect destination for a relaxed day of eating, drinking and lazing on the beach.

For something more cosmopolitan, head two hours north to Tampere. You’ll easily fill a day exploring the Särkänniemi Theme Park, the Duck Park, and Pyynikki Park. And if you were a fan of the Moomins back in the day, the Moomin Museum should definitely be on your itinerary!

Turku is another nearby major city and can be reached in less than two hours.
