There is plenty to see in Düsseldorf itself, but it is also a great base for exploring more of Germany and over the borders too.

Driving in Düsseldorf

In Germany, you can rent a car with a US driver’s license. International licenses are accepted but not legally required.
Driving in Düsseldorf is relatively easy, and there are plenty of parking options for cars, including street parking and multi-story garages. However, it is generally recommended to avoid the historic center where the streets are narrow and parking can be difficult.
In Düsseldorf itself the speed limit is 50 km/h. On autobahns (federal highways) and highways, it is 130 km/h. The limit on other roads is 100 km/h, and is reduced further in residential areas and around schools.
It is commonly believed that autobahns have no speed limits. However, around 50 percent of them do, and there can be heavy fines for dangerous driving on any road in Germany.
There are no toll charges for private cars on German roads.

Discover Düsseldorf and the surrounding area by car

Car rental in Düsseldorf gives you the flexibility to explore further afield; for example, follow the Rhine and visit some of the beautiful nearby towns.
Under an hour by car, Cologne (25 miles away) is close enough to easily visit from Düsseldorf. This beautiful cathedral city, with its multi-colored buildings and cobbled squares, is a great place to explore.
On from Cologne lies the picture-perfect town of Bonn (50 miles away), complete with the fairytale Schloss Drachenburg (Dragon Castle) watching over it. Its historic center is almost exclusively pedestrian, but you can park outside of this area and stroll around the town on foot.
Further afield, Brussels (125 miles), Rotterdam, and Amsterdam (both 140 miles) are all less than two and a half hours’ drive from Düsseldorf.

Things to see in Düsseldorf

The Medienhafen neighborhood, the once derelict harbor, is now filled with trendy bars and restaurants, and buildings by globally renowned architects such as Frank Gehry. When you have worked up an appetite, visit one of the cozy canteens serving warming traditional food and then enjoy a drink in one of the sprawling beer halls. Carlsplatz is a permanent market of cafés, takeaway outlets and fresh-food stalls.
Children and adults alike will be enchanted by the Marionetten-Theater, which puts on traditional puppet performances from classic fairy tales to musical operas.
Blush pink and frosted white like a cupcake, Schloss Benrath is a lovely three-winged palace designed by the French architect Nicolas de Pigage. Situated by an expansive lake, this is an exquisite example of Baroque architecture, with its formal rooms and English-style gardens. A section of the palace has been transformed into museums dedicated to natural history and horticulture. Schloss Benrath offers plenty of onsite parking and is around 30 minutes by car from Düsseldorf center.
