Athlone Town Centre is a picturesque town with many popular tourist attractions, both on land and on water. The history of Athlone started during the 12th Century when a bridge was first built to cross the river. To protect the bridge a fort was then constructed, which evolved into the Athlone Castle you see today. To the South of Athlone is Clonmacnoise, a monastery founded in 546, the ruins of which are still standing today and is well worth a visit. There are of course many pubs and restaurants to be found throughout Athlone town.
