In the United Kingdom, if you live within the EU, you just need a valid driver's licence to rent a car.

The speed limit is 70 miles per hour (112 km/h) for cars on motorways and dual carriageways, 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) for single track roads, and 30 miles per hour (48 km/h) for built up areas. Near schools or pedestrian-heavy areas, the speed is reduced to 20 miles per hour.

If you are driving in more remote areas of Scotland, be aware that the road surfaces might be different. Plan your journey, bearing in mind that the weather may affect driving conditions, and that there might be less petrol stations.

There are no toll fees on Scottish roads or bridges. In Paisley, parking is divided between on-street and off-street. There are three zones. In zones 1 and 2, parking fees apply from Monday to Friday, between 8am to 6.16pm. In zone 3, parking fees apply on Monday to Friday, between 8am to 5.16pm.

Usually, you can park for a maximum of 2 hours. In off-street car parks, you can usually stay for up to 24 hours or longer. Free parking on Saturdays and Sundays in metered bays only.

Paisley is one of the largest towns in Scotland’s, and rather under the radar. The home of the paisley pattern once sported on a shawl by Queen Victoria, the town still maintains its textile roots. Aside the breath-taking 12th century Abbey, Paisley also has a great arts scene, charming shopping areas and some great cafés and restaurants. Renting a car means you can see a bit more of Paisley and the surrounding areas. Popular day trips from Paisley include Stirling and Loch Lomond.

Further afield, the Scottish capital Edinburgh (57 miles/91 kilometres) and St Andrews (83 miles/133 kilometres) are within driving distance.
