Driving in Paris
US driver’s licenses are valid for rentals in France.
In the city center, the speed limit is 30 km/h, and the Paris ring road () has a separate speed limit of 70 km/h. The limit on autoroutes is 130 km/h, or 120 km/h in wet weather.
Paris is known for its unique layout, with the city divided into 20 districts (called ) that spiral out from the city center. It is congested at peak times, particularly along the main boulevards, but the flow of traffic through the center is consistent throughout the day.
You should stay away from bus and cycle lanes, which are sometimes physically separated from other traffic.
Be aware of the many cyclists on the roads, particularly in tourist areas where they may not be familiar with the roads, and/or cycling.
Along the Seine are embankment roads (called ) that can be used by cars when they are open; however, they are increasingly being designated for pedestrian use only.
